THE PARADOXICAL HEALING REQUIRED BY TRAUMA in ADAM RESURRECTED

Adam Resurrected is the stunning film adaptation of the acclaimed and controversial book written by the Israeli novelist, Yoram Kaniuk. Starring Jeff Goldblum and William Dafoe, it tells the fictional story of Adam Stein, a gifted magician in a 1930’s Berlin cabaret act. Stein is brought with his family to a concentration camp where he is recognized by its Commandant, and forced to live like a dog and play the violin for gas chamber prisoners, including his own wife and daughter.  After the war, Stein becomes a gifted but profoundly wounded Israeli psychiatric patient who is unable to be reached emotionally until meeting an abused and feral boy who believes he is a dog.  Their relationship forces Adam to redemptively confront his own trauma.  Using the Holocaust as a metaphor for universal trauma, Adam Resurrected examines how the healing of severe trauma demands the paradox of turning towards the darkness and returning to the wounding.  Jung's seminal ideas about the psyche's archetypal energies and dissociative properties, coupled with Jungian Analyst Donald Kalsched’s groundbreaking work on trauma, provides a scaffold from which to view and reflect upon this psychologically evocative film.

Learning Objectives: Following the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1.  Understand the immense struggle faced by traumatized people trying to re-enter life and, in

the case of clinicians, in the lives of clients;

2.  Identify ways in which the Self utilizes mythopoetic imagery to moderate and heal from

trauma; and

3. Demonstrate knowledge of the psyche’s requirements for endorsing life after trauma,

especially the crucial role of human relationships in promoting healing in one’s own life and

in the lives of clients.

Dominic Callahan, Ph.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Coral Springs, FL.  A former President of the Center for Jungian Studies, he has presented often for the Center on issues ranging from addiction to the interface of the collective and the personal.
